Look significa olhar, mas look after é cuidar, look for é procurar e look up é consultar.
Alguns phrasal verbs aceitam o objeto no meio: turn off the light ou turn the light off. São os separáveis, e com pronome a separação vira obrigatória: turn it off, nunca turn off it. Outros nunca se separam: look after the kids, jamais look the kids after.
Get up, wake up e get ready abrem a manhã. Turn on, turn off, put on e take off tratam de objetos e roupas. Give up, carry on e figure out descrevem esforço e decisão. Find out, look for e look up organizam busca de informação. Call back, hang up e pick up dominam o telefone. Run out of, throw away e put off resolvem imprevisto.
O tempo verbal cai no verbo, não na partícula: I gave up, she gives up, they have given up.
A partícula fica intocada. Dois cuidados: muitos phrasal verbs são irregulares no passado, como give up e get up, e alguns pedem preposição fixa depois, como run out of milk.

Give significa dar e up significa acima, mas give up é desistir.
Se turn it off soa natural, o verbo é separável. Se a única forma possível é look after it, ele é inseparável.
Quantos phrasal verbs preciso saber?
O tempo recai sempre sobre o verbo, nunca sobre a partícula: give up vira gave up, get up vira got up, run into vira ran into.
